Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay learned to love the arts from the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
